We’ve been using Uploadcare.com to host/modify user-uploaded images for our template projects for several years without issue. Something changed between yesterday and today – and Templater is no longer loading these images. Any idea what may have changed and/or possible solutions? We have not updated software or made any other changes in this time period. We are using Google Sheets as our data source…all other data pulls in as usual (including locally stored images and images hosted on AWS).

      Here is a sample URL:

Can you give us some details on what happens when you try and use that link in Templater? I performed a few tests using that link, and it seemed to display without any problems in my test project file. Do you have any additional plugins or Expressions running on the layer? Let us know what you can, and we’ll see what we can do. Thanks!

@veteos are you still having issues with your Uploadcare uploads not importing into After Effects?

Hi @Jeff and @jon I’m sorry the above thread was never responded to. I think we likely identified a problem on our end and never replied back! However, we’re having a similar issue again so I thought I’d reply back in this thread. This time we have two identical files (uploaded using two different methods to Uploadcare) and one is loading into Templater okay, but the other isn’t. Is there anything you can see on your end as to why Templater might be treating these two files differently?

            Loading:

            Not loading:

We are using Templater 3.2.0 on a Mac Studio (OS 13.3.1) within After Affects Version 23.3x53

            Thank you!

@veteos As far as I am able to determine, they are bit-for-bit identical. I’m not sure why one would work and one wouldn’t—the only thing different is the URL. What can you tell us about how the images were uploaded differently? Are you getting a specific error message, or does nothing happen?

We have run into issues where certain images just refuse to import to AE as if they are corrupted, even though they aren’t. This is an issue that started in AE 2020, when Adobe switched the default import library that they used for importing JPEGs. We’ve been in contact with Adobe about it, but we don’t have any further knowledge about why it’s happening. This doesn’t appear to be the issue you’re experiencing, though, so it’s puzzling.

@jon I’m realizing why we had delayed response last time…email notifications were turned off on this account…I should respond quicker now ; )

The image that isn’t working was uploaded via Uploadcare’s widget in Zapier. The one that is working was manually uploaded via their portal (not a normal part of our process I found out it worked accidentally while trying to problem-solve why the original method stopped working).

We’re not getting a specific error message, it’s just loading our “Placeholder for missing visual footage” image.

One other piece of information is that the URL is working on our other machine that is still running Templater version 3.1. The problem was identified around the same time we updated our main machine to version 3.2. Perhaps downgrading to 3.1 is a good short-term fix?

There shouldn’t be any significant difference in how Templater 3.1 handles image processing over Templater 3.2, so I don’t know that that would change anything in what you’re seeing.

Let me ask, are the two URLs to the linked images above the same URLs that Templater is using to access the media? I did some testing with both of those links, and they loaded into Templater without an issue. Are the same systems that were having issues loading the images previously able to load them now if you test them manually?

If that’s the case, this issue might have less to do with the format or upload method and be more related to a timing issue. Without knowing more, this is a shot in the dark, but we have encountered problems in the past where automated systems will attempt to process a job in Templater before all the assets have been completely uploaded. Is it at all possible that that might be the case here?

If we’re still running into a scenario where certain remotely-hosted content won’t load even if loaded into Templater manually, we’ll likely need to examine some more examples of the problem URLs. You’re more than welcome to post them here if you like, but if you’d rather move this to a more private channel, feel free to drop us a line at support@dataclay.com.

Let’s start by untangling some of the specifics, and we’ll see where we need to go from there.

                  Thanks!

@jeff Okay, thanks for all your help! I figured out what was happening. While updating Templater to 3.2 our Templater preferences had to be reset…when doing that I missed a setting. After turning “Allow unique downloads for cloud-based assets” back to the “on” position everything seems to be functioning normally again. Thanks so much for your time in helping me locate the issue!
